First round of Finals – Game day Roundup

FOOTBALL

With only the one round remaining, both the reserves and senior sides were keen to have a solid hit out heading into finals and both sides didn’t disappoint sending both Griffith grades back down the highway without the four points.
The Magoos were simply on fire from the outset. Holding Griffith to just 2 goals for the first THREE quarters of the game, meant the backline wouldn’t figure highly in the award winners list!! Ben Farrell continued his push for a senior call up if the opportunity arises, Scott Pearce was hungry, Nath Angel was solid all day, Sam Lucas continues his form run heading into September whilst Carter Lovell and Sammy Schirmer’ where others to shine . With a few selection headaches on the horizon, the boys look sharp at this time of year.
The main game was billed as match of the round with 1st taking on 3rd. The end result for a newcomer would not have indicated the Swans pozzy on the ladder. 54 – 1 at half time, the Swans never looked in it and the second half remained the same GOALESS at the end of the game 130 point win for the senior squad. With spots up for grabs , there were no passengers with the likes of Jacko Kelly having it on a string, Jess Manton is just all class at times, Nick McCormack had his usual reliable hard game down back, Nick Ryan is one to watch come finals time and ‘Bendy’ Meyers slotting them at will.
Today is our chance to get tickets to the ‘Big Dance’, the seasons starts today lads , lets all get behind all grades and get that week off !!

NETBALL

It was an exciting weekend for the netballers who clinched the club championship by three points. We also had all grades make finals with Reserve grade getting the week for coming in minor premiers. Saturday saw the under 17’s start the day with a close win against Gullie. The game was close in all four quarters. Some great shooting by Bridget Robertson and Eliza Kelly combined with consistent feeding and defence by Maddi Kelly in the centre court saw the girls clinch the win to allow them to play for a chance in the grand final next week. A grade also played Saturday against Mangoplah. The game saw the girls start slowly with a large number of mistakes giving them a lead of only three goals. Some missed opportunities in the second half saw Mango nudge in front at half time. Fortunately the girls were able to find a way into the game and gained valuable intercepts and converted these gaining 12 goals in the third quarter setting up the run home and allowing the girls the win for the weekend. Better players for the day were Kate Bell, Rachael Addison and Jess Allen. A grade will now meet Gullie for their chance to progress straight to the grand final.
B and C grades both played Sunday for a do or die match to remain in the finals bid. Unfortunately, C grade bowed out with Coolamon being the better team on the day. The game was pretty even for the first three quarters. Coolamon managed to hit back quick in the fourth and their fitness proved invaluable in the win. B grade played Mangoplah in a nail biter and proved they a good outside chance to take the flag for 2016. This has been a regular occurrence for B grade winning the tight matches. The game saw the lead change multiple times for sixty minutes. Ellen Briggs and Lucy Regan playing a vital role in the win.
Congratulations to all our teams and great effort for the season to our C graders.
Go tigers!
